This year’s theme reflects the association’s interest in interdisciplinary approaches to art history. Recent advances in philosophy, psychology and the cognitive sciences have drawn attention to new concepts of body consciousness, or somatic consciousness, suggesting that the body is the basic medium of perception and therefore knowledge. Moving beyond the duality of body and mind, somatic philosophy, thus, attempts to delineate a new relationship between body, ethics and aesthetics (somaesthetics). The conference papers that will address the manner in which representations of the body may suggest ways of thinking about knowledge, seeing, perception, the ontology of the body and other embodied functions.
